The specifications of the Smart #5 SUV come to light
At 4.7 metres long, the Smart #5 will be the largest model in the manufacturer’s vehicle lineup.
Following the unveiling of the Smart Concept #5 at Auto China in April, development of the production version of Smart’s new mid-size SUV has moved forward quickly. This week, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China (MIIT) published the approval documents for this model, revealing some of its main technical specifications.
The Smart #5 measures 4,705 x 1,920 x 1,705 mm, with a wheelbase of 2,900 mm. There will be two rear-wheel-drive models, with outputs of 250 or 267 kW, and two all-wheel-drive models, with outputs of 432 or 475 kW. In the dual-motor variants, the front motor always delivers 165 kW, while the output of the rear motor varies depending on the version. In the top model it provides 310 kW, and in the standard one, 267 kW. According to the licence application submitted to the MIIT, an LFP battery pack is available in the single-motor versions of the five-door model, while the NMC battery pack is standard on the all-wheel-drive models. For now, however, the capacities of both battery packs remain unknown.

Nevertheless, in April Smart revealed that this model would feature an 800-volt architecture and a battery pack with a nominal capacity of more than 100 kWh. The maximum charging power supported was not mentioned, but it is expected to be quite high, or the charging curve very flat. In this way, it will be possible to increase the battery charge from 10 to 80 percent in just 15 minutes, as promised. During the Beijing Motor Show, where the Smart Concept #5 was presented, a company representative also mentioned a range of more than 550 kilometres under the WLTP homologation cycle.
Some other technical specifications worth highlighting
The new registration application submitted to the MIIT also indicates that the top speed of the five-seat model is 200 km/h, while the top model is even faster, reaching 210 km/h. The wheels fitted to this model, on the other hand, range from 18 to 21 inches, and the kerb weight of the top model is 2.45 tonnes.
Finally, it is worth noting that compared with the prototype presented in April, the production version of the Smart #5 is somewhat more streamlined and noticeably more angular.

The Smart #5 will be the brand’s third model, expanding the manufacturer’s electric vehicle lineup alongside the #1 compact SUV and the #3 SUV coupé. According to some sources, this new model will go on sale during the last quarter of the year. As is well known, Smart is now a joint venture between Geely Group and Mercedes-Benz, and it manufactures all its vehicles in China. It remains to be seen, therefore, to what extent the imminent increase in tariffs on electric vehicles imported from this Asian country will affect the brand’s sales in Europe.
