Elon Musk has confirmed that the new Model Y will be built on a new platform and will reach the market in late 2019 or early 2020. Unlike what we thought, the fourth model in the Tesla family will be built on a structure different from that of the Model 3.

Earlier this year, Tesla announced its goal of delivering between 47,000 and 50,000 units of the Model S and Model X in the first six months of the year. Now, on the occasion of presenting Tesla’s financial results for the first quarter of the year, the brand’s chief executive has stated that with the launch of the Model Y before 2020 they aim to reach their target of achieving one million sales per year.

When the launch of the new Tesla Model Y was made public, the brand itself confirmed that it would be built on the same platform as its predecessor, the Model 3. It is now that Musk has confirmed the vehicle will be manufactured on a completely new platform in which the 12-volt battery will not be used. The Model Y’s structure will not have a lead-acid battery like the earlier models, although we do not yet know what electronics it will incorporate. The brand’s president has stated that the model will have less wiring, which would reduce the production time of each car.

The upcoming Model Y will be the new compact SUV in the range, with a more affordable price than its predecessors. For now, Tesla has not given many details about the new model, but what we do know is that it will be similar in dimensions to the Model X and that it will feature the same gull-wing doors.
