The Toyota GR Super Sport is already running at the Fuji Circuit

The new Toyota GR Super Sport is the brand’s weapon for competing in the new Hypersport class of the WEC. The most interesting part is that, thanks to the regulations for this class, there will be a minimum of 20 road-legal units.

While we are still recovering from the victory of Fernando Alonso, Kazuki Nakajima and Kamui Kobayashi (Toyota Gazoo Racing) at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the manufacturer has published a video of its next monster for the World Endurance Championship.

The Toyota GR Super Sports was already announced last year at the legendary race held at the La Sarthe circuit. This model is designed to compete in the new Hypercar class, which is expected to debut next year. Let us remember that the essential requirement for competing in this category will be a minimum of 20 production units of the prototype presented for the road, in the purest style of the old Group B cars of the WRC.

This means that, thanks to this new development, we will be able to see Le Mans cars on the streets. The unit we see in the video is the latest road version of the model, and it is speculated that it features a hybrid engine with all-wheel drive that develops a brutal 986 horsepower.

Akio Toyoda, the company’s CEO, is not the typical businessman who shuts himself away in offices. He has personally wanted to oversee the development of his next machine, so he works hand in hand with both the engineers and Kobayashi, who is in charge of tuning the car at the Fuji Circuit.

Toyota has not wanted to reveal the roar of the engine under the bonnet of its hypercar, so it has disguised it with a soundtrack that does not satisfy our desire to hear the car. From what has been seen, there are two prototypes of the Toyota GR Super Sport: one with a large appendage on the roof and another without it.

The regulations for the new Hypercar category created by the WEC organisation state that the cars cannot exceed 750 horsepower nor weigh more than 1,100 kilograms on the scales. Entrants may use hybridisation, although their electric motor cannot exceed 270 horsepower.

The production version will be more powerful than the track version

This means the road-going version of the Toyota GR Super Sport will probably be considerably more powerful than the racing car. It is believed the manufacturer will take the combustion engine of the Toyota GR TS050 Hybrid Race, which won last weekend at La Sarthe, and install it in the new model.

This means the heart that pumps fuel will be a 2.4-litre twin-turbo V6 capable of delivering 493 horsepower. After seeing the power figures of the Aston Martin Valkyrie or the Mercedes-AMG One, it would not be surprising if Toyota wanted its new hypercar to sit above them. This means it would be easy for the Toyota GR Super Sport to exceed 1,000 horsepower.

If we take the WEC regulations at face value, manufacturers will have to build the 20 production units of their competition prototypes within two years of putting their car on the grid for the 24 Hours of Le Mans 2020. Therefore, this means the Toyota GR Super Sport will be ready to hit the streets in the summer of 2022, so you still have two years to keep filling the piggy bank.
