There will be no Geneva Motor Show, but the CUPRA Formentor still shows its teeth on the track anyway

The CUPRA Formentor is moving forward and reveals some juicy information: it will feature a plug-in hybrid variant capable of producing 245 CV.

Today we learned that the 2020 Geneva Motor Show was not going to take place, which definitively rules out the live presentation of certain models. Nevertheless, and despite this change of events, brands like CUPRA are pressing ahead with the development of their proposals. In fact, during the presentation of the new CUPRA León, representatives of the brand let us know that it would be in Switzerland where the CUPRA Formentor, the first vehicle developed entirely by CUPRA, would see the light.

However, this has not stopped the Spanish firm from finding ways to keep feeding our eagerness to learn every last detail of its new member. To get us going, CUPRA has shared a video in which the new Formentor, still covered in camouflage, flexes its muscles on the track, the main terrain of the brand’s cars.

At the same time, professional drivers Jordi Gené and Mattias Ekström have actively taken part in the development of CUPRA’s new sporty crossover. Both confirm that the tuning of this model is suited to both the road and the track, with the aim of making the Formentor a car capable of meeting the needs of many types of customers.

To achieve this balance, the brand’s engineers opted for the same hybrid engine we first saw in the new CUPRA León. That is, it combines a 1.4-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, a pairing that delivers 245 CV and 370 Nm of torque. At the same time, we must add the ability to drive in 100% electric mode with a range of 60 kilometres.

For now, CUPRA has not yet laid down the law on the other engines the Formentor will offer, the compact model par excellence. If so, we would be talking about a range with three more options, all starting from the same 2.0-litre, four-cylinder engine capable of delivering 245, 300 and 310 CV, with the most powerful variant only available on a possible Formentor 4Drive.

This is how CUPRA begins to clear up doubts about its much-anticipated model, a vehicle that, alongside the cancellation of the Geneva Motor Show, raises only one question: when will it be presented? The only thing the brand has confirmed is that sales will begin later this year, because we suspect that it will be a matter of days before we learn all the details of the new CUPRA Formentor.
