They say the Tata Nano will never reach Europe, while they prepare the gas version

While in Spain we are still waiting for a clear policy regarding the use of natural gas as a fuel, in India they seem to be further ahead on the matter. The tiny Tata Nano will have its gas version ready by the end of the year, keeping the same traditional engine.

Obviously, this version will give the Nano consumption and emissions figures well below its current ones. It was reported that the gas-powered Nano would be available by the end of the year, with gas tanks that will not sacrifice the vehicle’s scarce usable space, which I doubt. At the same time, it is announced that the Nano is opening new markets in other Asian countries, but that it will not reach Europe.

We were waiting for a positive or negative confirmation that the Nano could one day reach Europe, and it turns out it will not. As we feared, the Nano would have to undergo modifications that would make it more like an automotive Frankenstein than a car, in order to comply with European regulations.

With the Nano’s arrival ruled out, Tata now thinks about some other model in its catalogue whose modifications required would not weigh as heavily. So now they are considering a production version of the Tata Pixel (image below) making its way into the European continent.
