A native of Granada has created a Spanish combustion engine that weighs 35 kilograms and is capable of reducing CO2 emissions.

The Spanish combustion engine that could put an end to the fines for CO2 emissions has been developed in Granada, Andalusia. This new powertrain has up to 70% fewer parts and weighs only 35 kilograms. This weight translates into a notable reduction in space.

Furthermore, it is much quieter, significantly reduces carbon dioxide emissions, manufacturing costs are considerably lower and, therefore, fuel consumption is also lower.

Next year, 2021, is already marked in red on every manufacturer’s calendar, because during 2021 100% of the emissions target imposed by the European Union will be applied.

How the Spanish combustion engine works

This CO2 emissions target for vehicles is set at 95 grams of CO2 per kilometre. This can translate into a fuel consumption of 4.1 litres for a petrol vehicle and as low as 3.6 litres for a diesel car. If we are being realistic, these figures are quite difficult to achieve.

Faconauto, the dealers’ employers’ organisation, has pointed out that “this is a complicated situation”. It also estimates that sales of diesel cars, which already emit 20% less CO2, will pick up this year.

To help achieve these targets, Juan Garrido Requena is the creator of what he calls “the best internal combustion engine in the world”. Requena is from Granada and has been able to invent, patent and build this new internal combustion engine, which aims to reduce the CO2 emissions of the vehicles that fit it.

This new powertrain, which weighs 35 kilograms, is being built at the company INNengine, owned by Requena and three other partners, and founded ten years ago. Its creator has assured that this engine will revolutionise the automotive market. It is worth noting that it has already attracted the attention of some car manufacturers.

What are the characteristics of the new INNengine?

This new internal combustion engine has a displacement of 500 cc and is two-stroke, yet it delivers the performance of a four-stroke engine of 2,000 cc. As we have mentioned, it has up to 70% fewer parts and a reduced weight of 35 kilograms. This means it takes up less space and its consumption is also reduced.

Garrido Requena has stated that “it is the size of the engine you would find in a motorcycle and is equivalent to that of a conventional mid-to-upper-range saloon”. The Granada-based company has stated that “when the vehicle starts, a lot of energy is lost through the exhaust. Two thirds of the energy available in the fuel is thrown onto the road. We have invented an engine capable of recovering the energy that is released. It is going to be an enormous revolution”.

Roberto Lendado, commercial director of INNengine, has stated that “cities are not prepared, and will not be, to withstand so much load. The future is hybrid. And our engine also plays a fundamental role there”. Its creators have wanted to add that this patented engine can be “coupled” with an electric motor as a range extender.

For his part, the creator of the powertrain has concluded that “the difference is that our engine is much smaller, whereas current hybrid engines are very large and very heavy. With ours they gain space, consume far less on the road and leave a smaller CO2 footprint“.
