Audi has just unveiled the Audi A3 Sportback 2020, so it’s a good time to compare the differences between it and the version launched in 2016

During the dates when the Geneva Motor Show, which was ultimately cancelled, was due to take place, several new models were presented. One of them was the Audi A3 Sportback, the version that replaces the current Audi A3 Sportback, which arrived in 2016. What we want to find out is what differences this new version has compared to the previous one.

Exterior design

The exterior design of the new version of the Audi A3 Sportback features a different front end, with a larger grille. The front splitter is fitted at the bottom, although there is more separation between the grille and it. The air intake trim has also changed. The look of the headlights has been modified too, improving on the LED technology of the previous model.

The bonnet is larger and runs across the full width of the front end. In the centre, two ridges running along the bonnet have been added, which give the whole a very attractive touch. There are other notable differences on the side. For example, wider wheel arches have been designed, although the roof rails are retained, giving an image reminiscent of the previous model.

The rear features different light clusters, and the tailgate recalls some of the SUV models of the German brand. The rear bumper has dropped the visible exhaust and has a different design. From behind, it looks quite different and even offers a more attractive and dynamic image. Finally, there are alloy wheels with a new design and different body colours to make it look even better.

Interior design and equipment

Inside, the Audi A3 Sportback also differs greatly from its predecessor. In fact, we could almost say that it is a completely different car. To begin with, the steering wheel comes from the Audi A4, and the new model has a screen for the instrument display. The other screen, the one for the infotainment system, is integrated into the dashboard, abandoning its previous position on top of it.

The climate control system is new, and the air vents are located on each side of the steering wheel and in the dashboard in front of the passenger seat. The light controls have been redesigned, and the selector that was in front of the gearbox has been removed. There are also new controls on the dashboard, and the whole looks more modern and attractive.

The boot retains its capacity of 380 litres, and when the seats are folded down, it reaches up to 1,200 litres.

Engines

Not all the engines available in the Audi A3 Sportback have been announced yet, but we know it drops the 1.6 TDI 115 CV engine. The 1.5 TFSI 150 CV engines are retained, as is the 2.0 TDI 150 CV. A 2.0 TDI diesel unit with 115 CV joins the range. As for transmission, it is offered with a manual gearbox and a seven-speed S tronic automatic gearbox.

More versions with different power outputs will arrive later. S and RS versions, a CNG option, mild hybrid and hybrid versions are also expected, along with others with front-wheel drive and quattro four-wheel drive.

Technology

The technology fitted to the Audi A3 Sportback 2020 includes a front radar that allows the adaptive cruise control to operate. It has lane keeping assist, traffic sign recognition, a parking assistant and blind spot detection, among other technologies. All of this makes it more appealing to potential buyers.

And we come to the price of this new version. The version of the Audi A3 Sportback 2020 equipped with the 1.5 TFSI engine with 150 CV is priced at 29,070 euros, while the identical previous version cost 30,070 euros, exactly 1,000 euros more.
