TRD prepares the next generation of the Lexus IS

TRD, the department in charge of developing the sporty versions of Toyota, has launched a preparation kit for the new saloon of its premium brand, the Lexus IS. Consisting of a body kit, new suspension, and a sport exhaust, it gives the IS a real bite.

Only a few months have passed since the third generation of the Lexus IS went on sale, and like any good Japanese car, the tuners are starting to unveil their most aggressive bets. The Lexus IS is a good canvas on which to create very special builds.

In this case, the preparation comes from within, since it is TRD that has taken charge. TRD stands for “Toyota Racing Developments“, a special division within the Toyota parent company that is responsible for adding a bit of bite to the Japanese manufacturer’s most popular models.

The star of this update is the Lexus IS, a D-segment saloon whose rivals include the BMW 3 Series, the Mercedes C-Class and the Audi A4. This new generation, launched earlier this year, aims to stand out from traditional premium saloons thanks to its new hybrid powertrain (IS 300h), its sporty tuning and its refined interior, not to mention a design that breaks with the brand’s conventions.

However, at Toyota they know that for some customers this is not enough, which is why TRD has launched a preparation consisting of a body kit (front and rear spoilers, side skirts and a lower rear diffuser), chassis adjustments thanks to stiffer suspension and new 19″ wheels, and a sport exhaust system with a more aggressive sound.

The good news for potential buyers is that you don’t have to buy the whole package; you can choose only the accessories you want. Prices start at $2,300 for the chassis adjustment, rise to $4,300 for the aerodynamic kit, and finish at $5,200 for the exhaust system. The bad news is that these accessories will only be available in Japan and at a handful of dealerships in North America.
