Tyre balancing: how, when and why it is done
Tyre balancing is carried out not only when new tyres are fitted, but also when vibrations are felt due to the tyres

When it comes to getting on the road, there are many things to keep in mind, but one of the most important is the condition of the tyres. We never stop repeating that it is important to keep the correct tyre pressure in order to drive safely. But it is also important to consider tyre balancing, so we are going to tell you how, when and why it is done.
Tyre balancing
Tyre balancing is the mechanical process that prevents vibrations caused by the wheels and ensures they do not reach the suspension and the steering. Balancing the wheels extends the life of the tyres because it prevents premature wear, while also ensuring the proper operation of the shock absorbers, suspension and rims.
When wheel balancing is carried out
Wheel balancing
is carried out when new tyres are mounted on the rims. The wheels are placed on a specific machine, which marks the points where the small wheel weights will be fitted to act as counterweights, and how many are needed for each wheel.
When a vibration is detected while driving, you should think about going to the workshop so they can identify the source of the vibration. It may be that the wheels need balancing, and it is easy to identify which axle needs this operation. If the vibrations occur in the steering wheel or the dashboard, it is the front wheels that need balancing.
If the vibrations appear in the seats or the rear seats, balancing should be carried out on the rear wheels. In any case, it will be the mechanic who determines what is happening to the tyre and how the problem can be solved.
Difference between wheel alignment and tyre balancing
Although many people believe they are the same, wheel alignment and tyre balancing are not the same thing. We have seen that
tyre balancing eliminates wheel vibrations
, while alignment seeks to adjust the alignment of the wheels and their axles, also preventing wear and possible breakdowns.
What is important is that any tyre handling or replacement is always carried out by a professional who has the right tools not only for correctly fitting the tyre, but also for carrying out proper balancing and avoiding later problems.
