Volocopter takes an important step forward in making its air taxi a reality

The engineering team successfully carried out an exhaustive vibration test of the VoloCity air taxi from the German company Volocopter.

The VoloCity, the electric air taxi developed by the German start-up Volocopter, has overcome a major hurdle on its path to certification. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has successfully completed static vibration tests on this model, a crucial step in ensuring its safety and efficiency.

The VoloCity is an electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, known as a VTOL, designed to transport people or goods over short distances in urban areas, combining the versatility of a helicopter with the environmental benefits and efficiency of electric propulsion.

This model is characterised by its configuration of 18 electric motors arranged in a circular elastic ring. This has posed a notable challenge for the engineers carrying out this project due to vibrations. These tests are therefore considered essential for determining the dynamic response of the VoloCity’s structure.

No margin for error

These tests lasted for a week and were carried out at Volocopter’s headquarters in Bruchsal. The air taxi was suspended from rubber ropes to allow 210 acceleration sensors to collect data reflecting its structural behaviour in flight. This data was analysed by DLR scientists and shared with Volocopter to further optimise the VoloCity’s design.

“The ground vibration test has determined the dynamic properties of the VoloCity and confirmed the model’s predictions, a crucial milestone that brings us closer to certification.”

Finally, it should be noted that these tests are not only vital for identifying vibration and oscillation problems early, but also for ensuring that the aircraft meets safety and performance requirements.

Earlier this year, Volocopter received an extension of its Production Organisation Approval from the German Federal Aviation Office (LBA), which will allow series production of the VoloCity to begin.
