Volvo and Google have joined forces to develop an in-car infotainment system that will launch within two years.

Volvo with Android OS and Google services

Volvo Cars has partnered with Google to develop an Android-based infotainment system. This new initiative will add new services such as Google Assistant to the current “Android Auto” system.

The Android connectivity system will run directly on the on-board computers and control the car in almost all of its functions, from the air conditioning to the windows. Apps will be available in vehicles without the need to connect a smartphone.

The carmaker clarified on Monday that this system will be available within two years and will feature several Android services. “Google’s platform and services will improve the user experience by allowing for more customization options. Android will offer greater flexibility from a development perspective,” said Henrik Green, Senior Vice President of Research and Development at Volvo.

Volvo is also collaborating with Google on another initiative to incorporate Google Local Search into its upcoming models, an app that serves to offer the location of your vehicle. This service will be rolled out in an update for customers who have the Sensus Navigation system. “We are delighted to partner with Volvo to bring Android to its latest-generation cars,” said Patrick Brady, Vice President of Engineering for Android at Google.

Google has clarified that its operating system will be open source, so it will also be compatible with Apple CarPlay.

Volvo is not the only manufacturer relying on Google to develop this operating system. Audi has also chosen the web search giant to develop its next connectivity solutions. The German carmaker will showcase the integration of Android Auto in the next Audi Q8 at Google’s annual technology conference, Google I/O.

As Volvo has confirmed, further details about the partnership and the Android operating system will be announced at Google I/O on May 17.
