Volvo introduces the new Drive-E engines

The engine range of Volvo will be renewed starting this autumn. The engines that will replace the current ones belong to the new Drive-E family that the Swedish brand has just officially announced. All of them will be based on a two-litre, four-cylinder block, and will take on the role of both the most efficient options and the V8s that powered the most powerful models until now.
To do so, they will use different levels of turbocharging or even be combined with electric motors. The latter could be located either at the front, thanks to the compact size of the engine, or at the rear, which would give the car all-wheel drive. The battery would be housed under the centre of the vehicle. They will be paired either with a six-speed manual gearbox, “improved” for maximum efficiency, or with a new eight-speed automatic.

Volvo highlights as one of the main novelties the i-Art injection technology of the Drive-E engines that run on diesel. It works by having each injector feature a small computer at its upper end, which measures the pressure in each cylinder. This allows it to determine the optimal amount of fuel it can receive, at no more than 2,500 bar. Individual regulation of cylinder pressure, instead of using one sensor for all, will reduce fuel consumption and emissions, as well as engine noise.
As for the petrol Drive-E engines, these will offer greater torque at low revs thanks to supercharging, and will receive a series of improvements to reduce internal friction. The S60, V60 and XC60 will be the first models to debut three of the Drive-E engines: the D4 with 181 CV, the T5 with 245 and the T6 with 306. Later, more alternatives will be added, covering power outputs from 120 to 230 CV for the diesels and from 140 up to the T6 for the petrol versions.
