Volvo stops making one of its best-known models: goodbye to the brand's largest estate

The Volvo V90 has stopped being produced at the brand’s factories, marking the disappearance of estate models from the Swedish brand’s lineup.

Sometimes brands have to make decisions they don’t like in order to guarantee the profitability of the company. And now it is Volvo announcing the end of production of one of its estate models, which is no longer available in its lineup and has stopped being built. After nine years of production, both the Volvo V90 and the V90 Cross Country are no longer available, leaving a gap in the brand’s range of family cars. In fact, only the V60 remains available for drivers who want an estate from Volvo.

This end of production is nothing new, as both models have been on shaky ground for several years. In the end, they failed to find their place in the estate range and have been withdrawn after nine years of production. The Volvo V90 was launched in 2016 and received an update in 2020 that improved its technological and visual offering.

This model’s engine range went from a 2.0-litre engine with 148 CV up to a turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine producing 316 CV, as well as a petrol hybrid delivering 455 CV.

A production run of 250,000 units

The Volvo V90 reached a total of 250,000 units built since 2016, a figure that is not bad at all. The last unit to leave the production line has been destined for the Heritage Collection of Volvo, where it will be displayed alongside other classic models from the brand, such as the Volvo 145, the Volvo 960 and the Amazon P220.

This model already faced a moment of uncertainty in the UK market, where it was announced that it would be withdrawn and that the final decision was being brought forward. Alongside this model, the withdrawal of the S90, the S60 and the V60 was also announced. The brand aimed to become a company fully dedicated to SUV bodystyles. However, barely a year after this announcement, Volvo decided to continue selling these models.

Now, with the elimination of the V90, only the V60 remains as the family estate. And its future is not assured: it is possible that it too will be discontinued within an indeterminate timeframe. An update is expected in 2026, but if the decline of estate models continues, it may stop being produced in favour of the almost omnipresent SUVs.
