Waiting a minute after starting the engine: necessary or a waste of time?
Engine temperature is important for it to work properly, which is why it is necessary to wait a minute between starting the engine and setting off.

When we start the car, we normally drive off straight away, so there is no time gap between starting the engine and setting off. But experts insist that we should allow some time between the two actions. There are several reasons for doing so, so let us review why it is advisable to wait at least a minute between turning the key and setting off.
One minute before setting off
This minute of engine operation is quite important, because while the car is idling the engine activates several of its functions, which allow it to run better and more efficiently. Let us look at what happens when we start the engine and it begins to run.

First, when the engine starts, it is not at the right temperature to run correctly. Both the injection and the exhaust are not yet at the correct temperature and do not function normally. It is true that the difference is minimal and the optimal operating mode is reached quickly, so it does not usually pose a long-term problem. But by letting the engine idle for a few seconds, you ensure that there is no overexertion and that it works correctly.
At first, the fuel does not burn properly and can create more pollution and increase consumption. It is not something that is noticeable in a dramatic way, but over the life of the vehicle the numbers can be very different if you wait a little before setting off.

Another element that needs to reach an optimal temperature is the engine oil. Oil is essential because it lubricates the engine’s mechanical parts. When the engine is started, the oil is at the bottom, cold, and not circulating through the system. It needs a few seconds to reach the operating temperature required to circulate without problems.
If we wait a few seconds, around a minute, the oil is already circulating and performing its function without problems. By following this practice, you can extend the life of the engine and mechanical parts, as wear is reduced.
Above all, winter is a time when the engine will take longer to reach the right temperature, since everything will be colder. Waiting that minute before setting off can help keep the engine in good condition for longer and also save fuel and reduce pollution.
