In 2024, sales of electric vehicles fell at Mercedes-Benz
The results recorded in 2024 confirm the recent update to the company’s future strategy, boosting its offer of plug-in hybrid models rather than focusing exclusively on pure electric ones.
Now that 2024 has come to an end, it is time to analyse the results obtained over the last twelve months, which brought some unpleasant surprises for Mercedes-Benz. Last year the German manufacturer managed to sell a total of 204,600 vehicles with electric propulsion systems. This figure represents a 22 percent drop in sales compared with the same figure recorded the previous year.
This fall in electric vehicle sales affected both the passenger car division of the German firm and its van division alike. This trend also persisted throughout the year, with sales of this type of vehicle falling 24 percent in the last quarter of 2024.

Over the last twelve months, the passenger car division of Mercedes-Benz managed to put 185,100 vehicles on the market, thereby recording a 23 percent drop in sales compared with the previous year, when 222,600 electric vehicles were sold. This also means that in 2024 sales of electric models from the commercial vehicle division of Mercedes-Benz reached 19,500 units.
Customers of the German manufacturer prefer the brand’s models with combustion engines
The market share of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles was also reduced in 2024 relative to the company’s total sales, falling from 11 percent recorded in 2023 to 9.3 percent in 2024.
This drop in the market share of Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles relative to total sales occurred even though total sales also declined, although not as drastically. According to the data presented by the company, Mercedes-Benz sold 1.98 million vehicles in total in 2024, a decrease of 3 percent compared with the previous year.

The decline in the German manufacturer’s sales was also more significant in the North American and Chinese markets, with 7 and 8 percent fewer sales, respectively, while in Europe it was only 3 percent. Likewise, analysing by segment, the mid-range segment achieved the best results, with a 6 percent growth in sales, while the high-end and entry-level segments fell by 14 percent.

Although Mercedes does not detail sales figures by model, everything suggests that the new electric version of the G-Class has been very well received in the market, achieving a sales record at its launch. On the other hand, the German manufacturer’s plug-in hybrid models increased their sales by 13 percent, which explains the company’s current strategy of promoting the launch of this type of vehicle, rather than focusing exclusively on purely electric ones.
Looking ahead, Mercedes-Benz plans to expand its electric model range this very year with the launch of the new CLA and the MMA platform. Company management has wanted to highlight the strength of the brand and the growing breadth of its product offering, especially in the high-end and mid-range segments.
