Watch out for the brakes! These are the signs that they are not working properly

If you notice a strange sound or squeal when using the brakes, it is an unmistakable sign that the brake pads are wearing down, but there are other warning signs too.

Brakes are one of the most important components of a car. They are responsible for reducing the vehicle’s speed and allow you to control it. But, like all mechanical parts, they wear down with use, and there comes a point when some of their components need to be replaced so that they keep working properly. This maintenance helps keep the brakes in good condition, with all their functions intact, and prevents further breakdowns and even accidents.

But do you know when you need to change the brake pads on your car? Normally, a mechanic detects the wear during the corresponding services, but sometimes the wear becomes very obvious and can be noticed just through use. So let us give you some tips so you can tell whether your car’s brakes need replacing.

Warning signs that the brakes are not working properly

  • A squealing sound when braking: This is one of the first warnings brakes give when they are wearing down. The squeal is caused by the brake pad rubbing against the metal backing plate. The friction material covering the brake pad normally prevents this noise, but as it loses thickness, the sound starts to appear as it wears down. If the sound is very loud, it means the pad is badly worn and is producing this unpleasant noise.
  • Braking is not correct: This is the most worrying symptom that the brakes are not working properly. If the brakes do not work correctly, the car cannot be controlled, and this can lead to serious problems while driving. There may be several causes, but it is time to take the car to the workshop. It is better to do so by tow truck, to avoid risky situations.

Reasons why brakes may not work properly

  • Worn brake pads: We have already discussed this. They cause sounds that should not be there, and small braking faults appear.
  • Brake fluid loss: This is easy to check. The brake fluid circuit is airtight and sealed. If the fluid level has dropped, there is a leak somewhere in the circuit. The leak must be located, sealed, and the reservoir refilled with brake fluid.
  • Air bubbles in the brake fluid circuit: The presence of these air bubbles can be very dangerous. It is also a risk if water molecules get into the circuit, as this can cause the metal components to oxidise.

How to avoid brake problems

  • It is important to check the fluid level and that the pads are in good condition. The brake fluid level should not drop, although the fluid should be replaced every two years, though this interval can vary depending on use and driving style. Sustainable and responsible driving can make the brakes work more efficiently. Pads should usually be changed every 25,000 kilometres. As with the fluid, their condition is also affected by how and how much the car is driven.
  • If you notice any strange sound or noise, take the car to the workshop. It is better to act early so that a professional can inspect it and prevent a major breakdown or even a risky situation.
  • Keep to the maintenance and replacement schedules for all the braking components. This will prevent unexpected failures and more serious, costly breakdowns.
