Have you ever heard about the mysteries of the Mystichrome paint from Ford? You should know that Mystichrome paint from Ford is one of the most legendary colours ever applied to a vehicle and, besides being very rare, it was actually “illegal” for anyone other than Ford to mix the paint. To give you an idea, only 500 coupés and 500 convertibles of the Mustang Cobra wear this curious colour.

Now, the YouTuber ThatDudeInBlue has had the opportunity to visit a workshop where one of these Mystichrome Cobras needed to be repainted after a run-in with an animal on the road, and while they were doing it, he made a video with the bodywork professional working there explaining the legend surrounding the famous colour.

Mystichrome from Ford, do you want to know more about this spectacular colour?

When this colour hit the market, only a handful of lucky body shops were authorised to paint a car with the legendary colour-shifting paint, and even then, a Ford representative had to be present to bring the paint, supervise the work and return the leftover paint to the carmaker. Supposedly, the reason for this was that the variants of the toners used to create the Mystichrome were also used in the anti-counterfeiting measures on the $20 bill of the time, so to ensure the paint was used for its correct purpose, someone essentially had to be there to guard it.

Today, many body shops have Ford’s authorisation to work with Mystichrome, and it is no longer necessary for a representative to be present to use it. However, despite the large abundance of authorised workshops, many of them refuse to take on the job simply because of how expensive the paint is. In ThatDudeInBlue’s video, just 450 grams of Mystichrome costs more than $3,000. Doing the maths, painting a car in this colour comes to around $26,000, and that is just for the paint itself, not to mention any kind of special labour related to working with such a scarce and valuable colour.
