In the complicated and convoluted world of buying and selling cars, choosing the right moment can make the difference between a successful transaction and a long wait. Many factors, from the type of vehicle to geographic location, influence this decision. However, waiting until spring may be the key to getting the best price and speeding up the sales process. Why? We’ll tell you.

Better wait for spring

Putting a vehicle up for sale during the winter months may not be the wisest strategy. The data suggest that March (with 8.2% of annual transactions), April (8.4%) and May (8.5%) are the most favourable months to sell a car. This phenomenon is explained by the tendency of many buyers to postpone their purchasing decisions until weather conditions are more favourable.

Nevertheless, the end of summer and the beginning of autumn also present golden opportunities. According to the analyses, August (9.1%) and September (8.9%) are months when demand is on the rise, as some drivers look to acquire a vehicle before winter sets in.

Be smart, wait for the right moment

Choosing the right moment to sell your car can mean a quicker transaction and a higher sale price. When demand is low, sellers often find themselves having to negotiate and lower their price expectations.

For example, marketing a convertible in the middle of winter can be a challenge. These vehicles tend to attract more attention during the spring and summer seasons. Meanwhile, SUVs and four-wheel-drive cars maintain steady demand during winter, as buyers look for safer vehicles with good traction in adverse weather conditions.

December and January: tough months for saving

Contrary to popular belief, December and January are not ideal months to sell a car. During the holiday season, most people prioritise festive spending and avoid making major purchases. Subsequently, financial recovery and the resumption of saving in February lead to a decline in transactions in the used car market.

The economic situation also plays a crucial role in consumer confidence. In times of recession, inflation or economic uncertainty, significant purchases, such as property and vehicles, tend to be postponed. In December, only 7.6% of annual car inspections are carried out.

Transparency and trust

At any time of year, having a used car in good condition with a flawless history can speed up the sales process. Buyers value trust and transparency, and providing a detailed vehicle history report can create a sense of security that translates into faster transactions.
