Which Formula 1 drivers react the fastest at the start?

A test carried out by WTF1 shows us which drivers on the grid have the lowest reaction time at the start of Formula 1 races.

Valtteri Bottas’s start at the Austrian Grand Prix was spectacular, to the point that several studies measuring drivers’ reaction times claim it is practically impossible to improve on the 201 thousandths of a second with which the Finnish driver pulled away from the starting line. According to these studies, the minimum time in which a person can react to a visual stimulus – such as the lights going out at a race start – is 200 thousandths of a second. In other words, Bottas’s time is practically unbeatable, but which grid drivers react fastest at the start?

Although it is not an overly scientific method, the colleagues of WTF1 have carried out a test among several drivers on the Formula 1 grid – including Fernando Alonso – which determines who reacts first at the start. The result is truly surprising, especially in the case of the Asturian driver.

You can carry out the same test the drivers perform in this video yourselves by clicking here, but do not forget that anything below 200 thousandths is cheating; the aim is to react to the lights, not to anticipate them. At Formula 1 starts, any reaction below 200 thousandths is counted as a jump start (starting early) and carries a penalty. The FIA understands that if a driver reacts faster than that time, they have tried to anticipate the moment the lights go out and therefore have not followed the rules.
