Will diesel car sales fall? At Jaguar Land Rover they believe not

Although for most manufacturers the downward trend in diesel cars seems clear, the executives at Jaguar Land Rover believe there is still no valid alternative to them and are betting on cleaner diesel technologies for their models

Although it seems that the trend in Europe is a reduction in the presence of cars powered by a diesel engine, not all manufacturers agree with this idea. At least, it is something that is not taken very much into account in the offices of Jaguar Land Rover, which, contrary to what they think at Volkswagen, estimate that the drop in diesel vehicle sales will not be so dramatic.

For the rest of the manufacturers, the trend is clear and the definitive start of hybrid and electric vehicles to tackle the reduction in emissions that we so badly need. Jeremy Hicks, the company’s CEO, is not so clear about this effect and “does not see any major change that would replace diesel cars“. In his view, sales of its diesel models will increase until they reach 46% of the total, compared with 37% a couple of years ago.

The drop in diesel car sales could be halted if engines are improvedThe installation of the new Ingenium engines, which reduce consumption and emissions, is one of the measures they have taken and which will allow their models to reduce CO2 emissions. The proof they cite is the 110 grams of CO2 per kilometre achieved by the Range Rover Evoque, one of the most powerful in the range.

New diesel engines for hybrid propulsion systems

The executive of the British brand has also committed to developing diesel-hybrid propulsion systems, which will allow the specifications of engines of these characteristics to be used with the advantages offered by hybrid systems. This, he claims, will prevent large quantities of polluting gases from being emitted without losing the characteristics of diesel engines.

Although it is said that these diesel-hybrid systems will be used both in luxury models and in SUVs, there is also talk of developing a hybrid system with four-cylinder petrol engines that will be available for models such as the Evoque, the http://www.highmotor.com/fichas-tecnicas-coches-vehiculos-y-automoviles/jaguar-xe and the Discovery Sport.

Anyway, and despite the opinions of some and the hopes of others, it is still too early to see what will happen with diesel options. What is certain is that during the last few months there has been a considerable reduction in sales of this type of engine, so we will not have the opportunity to assess the trend for at least another year.
