Will McLaren build a four-seat GT to compete with the Porsche Panamera?

The CEO of the British company confirms its interest in building a Grand Tourer with a 2+2 seating configuration.

Throughout its history, McLaren has produced countless two-seat supercars, as well as several three-seat models, such as the upcoming BP23 (which will be the successor to the legendary McLaren F1); but never one with four or more seats. It seems nothing is forever. The British firm is considering the option of producing a model with a 2+2 seating configuration.

With this supposed model, McLaren could follow the strategy of its two major rivals and produce a Grand Tourer along the lines of the Ferrari GTC Lusso or the Porsche Panamera; four seats in both cases. According to McLaren’s CEO, this GT would belong to one of the supercar lines it currently offers, the Sport Series or the Ultimate Series.

The main rivals of this model would be the Ferrari GTC Lusso and the Porsche Panamera. “[The possible model] could be part of the Sports Series or the Ultimate Series and would improve its practicality with a 2+2 configuration. We have to study it, we need to see whether there is room in the market and whether it would keep the driving attributes expected of our cars. We would have to use a slightly increased wheelbase, so we would lose a bit of the agility we currently have. But if what we get is more attractive than what is on the market, then we may well produce it,” said Mike Flewitt, CEO of McLaren, in an interview with AutoExpress.

If McLaren carries out its project, it would be a historic moment for the brand. Customers could fit ISOFIX seats in their supercar, for example; imagine the face of a child while their father drives at over 200 km/h!

The head of McLaren also recently confirmed that the firm has no intention whatsoever of building an SUV. Let’s hope they keep their word.
