Your Tesla Model 3 is ready to accompany you on your last journey

This variant, created by a Dutch customisation company, is designed to work as a fully electric hearse.

It may sound a little gloomy, but the last journey is something quite important. Funeral companies also need reliable vehicles with enough space to carry the coffin comfortably and to be able to offer a practical use. Until now, most vehicles of this type have been converted from models with combustion engines, but electric-powered hearses are already starting to appear.

With this idea in mind, the specialist company Derks Uitvaartmobiliteit has worked on a Tesla Model 3 to turn it into a practical hearse. To do so, they used a Model 3 Standard Range, which they modified in several respects so that it could fulfil this necessary function.

More length and rear space

To become the Hearse 3, which is the name given to this version of the model, the vehicle’s length has been increased, including the wheelbase. The total length of this modified Model 3 reaches 5.56 metres, about 866 mm more than the standard version.

This allows the coffin to be easily transported in the rear space. The cargo space has been improved by adding several storage compartments, which can be used to transport tools and other items needed for the job.

The front keeps the characteristics of the Tesla Model 3, with the front end, doors, headlights and bumpers intact. The roof extends in an aerodynamic way, turning the saloon into an estate car. The glass surfaces are typical of this type of vehicle, and there are blinds to maintain privacy inside.

Many hearses eliminate the rear side doors, but in this case the converter has kept two half doors that allow access to the additional storage spaces. Inside, a divider panel has been created to separate the front from the rear. By the way, in the rear an interior lighting system with LED lights that change colour has been fitted to provide an active ambience.

Battery and motor

The Hearse 3 keeps the drivetrain and battery of the variant it is based on. This means the battery has a capacity of 55 kWh. This allows a range of up to 491 kilometres, although with the additional weight this model will carry, this could be reduced to around 350 to 375 kilometres. The motor, located on the rear axle, delivers a power of 225 kW, equivalent to 302 CV.

The price of this version of the Tesla Model 3 has not been revealed, but it will be considerably more expensive than the basic Model 3. The latter costs 51,900 euros in the Netherlands, so this will comfortably exceed that figure, given the modifications. That said, it will be available across Europe, so many funeral companies on the continent will be able to start using these zero-emission electric vehicles.
