You're going to cry: 68 luxury cars crushed by steamrollers in the Philippines because they were smuggled in

The Philippine government wants to stop the mafias that bring luxury cars into the country and, every few months, destroy the ones they have confiscated

We all love luxury cars. Getting behind the wheel of a Lamborghini, an Auri R8, a BMW Z1 or a Maserati. They are cars out of reach for ordinary people, so when we see one drive past, we turn our heads. And that’s where the Filipinos come in, who let none slip through when they detect that a car has been bought illegally. The police have been confiscating several illegally purchased cars and storing them in a warehouse, far from their unlawful owners. We already know that many police forces in various countries make good use of these illegal luxury cars, integrating them into their fleet. But in the Philippines, they don’t do that.

What they have done with the 68 luxury vehicles they confiscated for having been smuggled into the country, without paying the corresponding taxes and without proper papers, has been to gather them in a vacant lot… and let several heavy machines drive over them, crushing them mercilessly. These cars and motorcycles, which also passed under the tracks of the machines, have not only been destroyed, but a very clear message has also been sent with it: in the Philippines, the law is taken very seriously.

This act, which in any other country would have been carried out discreetly, perhaps with a press release and a couple of photos, has become a televised spectacle. And not only the top brass of the Philippine police attended the event, but the country’s president also witnessed the “event” the president of the country. The problem of car smuggling has for some years been a real problem for the country, so the presidency wants to put a stop to this practice by local mafias.

This is not the first time that Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the destruction of luxury cars. In February, 30 luxury cars were destroyed. Some of these cars were worth more than $100,000, but that did not stop the Filipino president. On this occasion, the total value of the destroyed vehicles has been estimated at €5.05 million, so we can imagine the automotive marvels that were destroyed. There are videos of the moment, like this one that the Daily Mail distributed on YouTube, so we invite you to try to find out whether that car you dream of has been crushed by a huge industrial machine… If you dare, of course.
