7 keys that make the Volkswagen Caddy CNG the best tool for transport professionals

The Volkswagen Caddy CNG became the best-selling commercial vehicle with this technology in Spain in 2018. It has good reasons to be.

At Volkswagen we are firmly committed to contributing to the development and promotion of ECO mobility through the use of compressed natural gas (CNG).

To this end, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles signed an agreement last January with Gasnam, an association that promotes the use of this renewable fuel across the Iberian Peninsula. And the Volkswagen Caddy CNG, the best-selling commercial vehicle with this technology in 2018, shows that compressed natural gas is a real alternative thanks to its many advantages. Let’s analyse them. But first, let’s take a look at the Caddy CNG in this video.

1 DGT ECO label

Vehicles running on compressed natural gas, such as the VW Caddy CNG, carry the ECO badge granted by the DGT. Among the most important benefits, remember that you can access city centres such as Madrid or Barcelona even during high-pollution episodes with restrictions. They also include discounts on some toll motorways and in regulated parking zones (SER), as well as the possibility of using BUS-VAO lanes. But there’s more. You can check all the advantages of the ECO label here.

2 Guaranteed range

The CNG technology of the Volkswagen Caddy makes this vehicle bivalent, meaning it can run on compressed natural gas or petrol. To make the most of CNG’s advantages, the Caddy relies on large-capacity gas tanks, which allow a range of up to 700 km on this fuel in the Caddy Maxi, thanks to the 34 kg of CNG it can store. To this figure you would add the extra 180 km that can be covered with the 13 litres of the additional petrol tank.

In the case of the Caddy CNG, the gas tanks have a capacity of 26 kg, which allows a range of 550 km in gas mode. The second tank also allows 180 km of driving on petrol, a range that makes it easy to reach the next filling station should we run out of gas.

Currently, there are already 75 operational natural gas stations in Spain, and another 11 in Portugal. And the network is constantly growing. You can check the map of filling stations where you can refuel CNG in Spain here.

3 Profitability: up to 50% savings

Can you imagine what a 50% saving on running costs means for a business? With the Caddy CNG, this saving is within reach, thanks to its lower cost per kilometre.

The official average consumption (NEDC cycle) of the Caddy CNG is between 4.1 and 4.6 kg of gas per 100 km. At current compressed natural gas prices (around €0.9/kg), this means that, translated into euros per 100 km, Caddy CNG vehicles can cover 100 km at a fuel cost of between €3.7 and €4.2.

Compared with a petrol engine, the saving can be as high as 50%, and 30% compared with an equivalent diesel.

4 Fewer polluting emissions

When a combustion engine runs on CNG, it produces extremely low emission levels. Specifically, up to 80 per cent less nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions, and more than 20% less carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Driving a Caddy CNG, therefore, makes you a champion of the ECO movement: its efficiency saves on running costs and, at the same time, helps improve air quality in our cities.

5 Efficiency… with performance

The 1.4 TGI BlueMotion engine of the Caddy CNG delivers 110 CV (81 kW) and a maximum torque of 200 Nm between 1,500 and 3,500 rpm. Smooth operation, combined with progressive power delivery, ensures ideal performance for efficient and relaxed driving, with strong acceleration and recovery even in high gears. Top speed exceeds 170 km/h.

The CNG tanks are made of special steel and designed to withstand heat. They feature triple-protection valves and are fixed to the bodywork by a series of special tensioning straps. All versions include an additional petrol tank.

6 The most complete range

A solution for every need. The Volkswagen Caddy CNG range currently includes seven versions powered by CNG: the Caddy CNG Van, the Caddy CNG Kombi and the Caddy CNG Trendline, all also available in the Maxi bodywork variant. To these is added the Caddy CNG Edition, the most refined version, designed for passenger transport.

With up to 17 different storage options, they offer a load capacity from 3.2 m³ to 3.7 m³, as well as different solutions for securing and configuring the load in the safest way.

In all versions, getting started with the benefits of CNG is as simple as refuelling and starting the engine. The performance and driving experience of the Caddy CNG are equivalent to those of any version with a combustion engine running only on petrol or diesel, and require no adaptation period.
