A 1-liter Ford Ecoboost with 150 horsepower: the three-cylinder in the stratosphere

The 1-liter, three-cylinder Ford Ecoboost engine could come in one or perhaps more uprated variants. A figure of 150 horsepower is being mentioned for a future production model.

It couldn’t take too long, and my most hidden suspicions have come true. Ford has asked itself the same question that many of us have asked when we found out about the different phases and models in which the little 1-liter, three-cylinder Ecoboost from Ford made its debut: How far can the little one be pushed?

The engineers in charge of this minimalist engine project have not found it difficult to get to work and verify what the limit of the three-cylinder is. Their reasoning has been that if it is going to deliver 123 horsepower in the Fiesta, it could possibly reach 150 in other models without much effort.

And given the precedent of the Ford Formula, equipped with a 3-cylinder, 200-horsepower Ecoboost (which reached 220 on the dynamometer), any resemblance to this experimental formula car will be no coincidence. Some Ford executives even asked for a limited edition of the Ford Formula to be built, such is the enthusiasm it has generated, along with another variant for a street model with a probable 150 horsepower.

The “experiment” has soon become an idea that could be used for a limited-production model. The little muscle of the family will have to pass a series of reliability tests before reaching any vehicle in the American brand’s lineup, but the possibility exists and is already underway.
