ADAS systems: these are the safety systems that will be mandatory in 2022
The European Union wants all new cars to have these ADAS systems as mandatory from July 2022 onwards in order to increase safety

ADAS systems help the driver improve safety, and they will soon be fitted to all new cars sold. In fact, the European Union will require all new vehicles sold from July 2022 onwards to include ten of these safety systems as mandatory.
The aim of the European institution is for driving to become increasingly safer, and to that end it wants drivers to have these driving-enhancing features at their disposal. The figures are compelling. Using these ADAS is expected to prevent around 25,000 deaths and 140,000 serious injuries per year caused by road accidents.

Mandatory driver assistance systems
As we have said, the requirement will come into effect in July 2022. From that date they will be mandatory on new vehicles that are type-approved, and later on all new vehicles that are registered. With this requirement, it is hoped that by 2050 the milestone of zero road traffic deaths will be reached, and to reduce it as much as possible by 2050.
The ADAS systems that will be mandatory from July 2022 are the following:
- Autonomous emergency braking for passenger cars
- Lane keeping systems for passenger cars
- Reversing detection for all vehicles
- Intelligent speed assistance for all vehicles
- Driver drowsiness and attention warning for all vehicles
- Seat belt reminder for rear seats in passenger cars
- Blind spot information systems for trucks and buses
- Tyre pressure monitoring for all vehicles
- Event Data Recorder for all vehicles
- Updated crash test requirements for passenger cars
These systems will become mandatory, but there are others that will also become present from that date. They are not mandatory, but the institutions want manufacturers to add them. Lighting improvements to increase visibility, cameras and sensors to better understand the surroundings, and many other features that help increase safety while driving.
