Model Y Tesla Electric Cars SUV
All signs point to production of the refreshed Tesla Model Y "Juniper" starting in January
2025 will probably be the year when the long-awaited refresh of the Tesla Model Y finally becomes a reality. For now, however, this remains a rumour, and the manufacturer has not officially confirmed anything.
Following the start of production of the new Model 3 “Highland” at the end of last year, the long-awaited refresh of the Model Y, following the path set by the latter, seems to be only a matter of weeks. Chinese media are very confident these days, stating that mass production of this new generation of the American manufacturer’s compact SUV will start at Giga Shanghai next January.
Although this information makes perfect sense and fully matches what many of us have expected for some time, it should not be forgotten that, for now, Tesla has not confirmed the launch of the new Model Y in early 2025. This is, on the other hand, also to be expected, since the American manufacturer normally tries to clear all existing stock of the current model, taking advantage of the sales boost usually seen in the final stretch of each year.

It should also be noted that, for now, Chinese media only refer to the start of production at the Shanghai plant, but if this news is confirmed, we can expect the Grünheide plant near Berlin, Fremont in California and the Texas Gigafactory, where the Model Y is also currently produced, to follow the same path within a short period of time.
What can we expect from this new Model Y?
Until Tesla, speaking through Elon Musk himself, announces the novelties the new Model Y will bring, everything points to it being basically the taller-riding SUV version of the Model 3 “Highland” we already know. In any case, we should not rule out that during all this time Tesla has been preparing some interesting improvement exclusive to the Model Y, whether in design or in its technical specifications.
Chinese media also speak, on the other hand, of the commercial launch at the end of 2025 of a new variant of this new Model Y with six seats, probably with a 2+2+2 layout. A model that may be of particular interest to families with several children but with a limited budget that does not allow them to opt for a Model X or for vehicles of that same segment from other manufacturers.

The Tesla Model Y was the best-selling vehicle globally in 2023, with more than 1.2 million units delivered to customers. Although the car market for electric vehicles has been somewhat more complicated in 2024, the compact SUV from Tesla has managed to achieve a high sales volume globally, remaining the best-selling model in multiple markets. With the long-awaited refresh of this model for early 2025, Tesla should be able to maintain its market-leading position for the Model Y over a good number of consecutive quarters.
