Another electric prototype on long-distance trips: 605 kilometres of range with a Audi A2

Several companies connected to electric cars, clubs or simply enthusiasts are setting off on the roads (I’m exaggerating a little, I know) to attempt distance records and thereby prove that electric cars are here to stay. We can debate or not the latter, while we watch how a Audi A2 converted to electric has managed to pass the 600-kilometre range barrier.

The attempt was made thanks to the collaboration between Lekker Energie and DBM Energy, a German battery manufacturer. Using an Audi A2, the distance between the German cities of Berlin and Munich was covered, a trip that may well be a world record for energy consumption in an electric car.

The truth is that the achievement is very good, not only for the distance covered on a single battery charge, but because they have not exactly been “walking” along the way. The average speed achieved was 110 km/h, and the trip ended with 18% of the electric charge still intact.

On the other hand, there is a factor that allowed the electric Audi A2 to reach this distance, and that is the design of its batteries. DBM Energy supplied new batteries that are lighter, more compact and more powerful than a traditional pack, operating at 97% efficiency. What’s more, these batteries are said to charge in 6 minutes, when connected to a special power outlet. Could this be the key to the greater efficiency we were expecting?
