Audi is preparing its crossover based on the A3

Audi is putting the final touches on what it has internally dubbed the elevated space vehicle. Under that name, we would be witnessing the arrival of a rival to the BMW 1 Series GT (Active Tourer Concept), using the group’s MQB platform. The idea is to build a vehicle offering generous interior room for five to seven seats and a spacious cabin.

Another name that sources close to Audi have mentioned is Spacer. The Spacer will measure 4.5 metres in total length and will seat five in its most common configuration, while seven seats would be an option. With its tall roof included, its look will be that of a compact MPV. Somewhat similar to Audi’s older concepts, such as the A2.

Its presentation this year has not yet been confirmed, although it could take place at the Frankfurt Motor Show if the advanced state of development of the model is confirmed. If the concept is confirmed, the production model can be expected to be available in 2016 or 2017, sharing many mechanical components with the current Audi A3, perhaps the 1.8 turbo or the 2.0 engine.

Audi would position this new model below the successful Q5, in an attempt to get ever more out of compact SUVs, the logical choice for buyers looking for a vehicle more versatile than a saloon, but without wanting to buy a full-blown SUV like the Q7.
