Audi has announced that it will present the Prologue Avant prototype next month at the Geneva Motor Show. It is simply an estate version of the family Prologue Concept shown at the Los Angeles Show in 2014. Like its predecessor, this new concept car will preview the design that Audi will first apply to the new A8 and then to the next generations of the A4, A6 and A7.

The transformation the Prologue will undergo by adopting the Avant name will place it in a segment where, if it is finally launched on the market, it would find very few rivals. The two additional rear doors and the new roof shape it receives barely change the impression the prototype made at the American show, keeping its athletic and imposing presence.

The dimensions of the Prologue Avant have not been confirmed, although it seems unlikely they have undergone significant changes compared with the Prologue Concept. No changes are expected in the mechanical section either; we recall that the latter was equipped with a four-litre V8 TFSI engine producing 605 hp and a maximum torque of 750 Nm.

The sketches of the cabin do not reveal much detail. Even so, it is not difficult to see that it remains practically intact from the Los Angeles Prologue. The difference, logically, lies at the rear. The second row of seats looks somewhat narrow, but that is the price to pay for an estate with such an attractive sloping roofline.

What seems to deceive a little more at first sight is the boot volume. The huge rear overhang and the upturned “rear end” of the Prologue Avant may offer more space than it first appears. With a few adjustments for the production model and approval to add a five-door A9 to the range, the Mercedes-Benz CLS Shooting Brake would finally have a contender worthy of its class.
