Audi RS5 TDI concept, celebrating 25 years of TDI

Audi celebrates the 25th anniversary of the launch of its TDI engines, and it does so in a very special way.
The brand with the four rings has prepared a prototype called “RS5 TDI concept” which offers a glimpse of future technology within turbodiesel engines.
This concept is based on the “standard” RS5, although the engine has been replaced by an experimental one, of course running on diesel.
It is a 3.0 TDI engine with two turbos and numerous mechanical advances that will soon be applied to the German brand’s road cars.
One of the most interesting innovations of this prototype is the introduction of electric turbocharging, that is, a turbo that is assisted by electrical energy, a technology that promises to completely eliminate “turbo lag” (turbo delay), since it keeps the turbine spinning even when the engine is not in an acceleration phase.

The engine of this RS5 TDI concept delivers 385 CV and 750 Nm, figures that allow it to achieve the performance of a true sports car. This is demonstrated by a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration in approximately 4 seconds, reaching a top speed estimated at over 280 km/h.
The best part is the combination of performance and consumption, since Audi states that the RS5 TDI concept is capable of consuming, under normal conditions, less than 5 litres per 100 kilometres, figures more typical of an A3 TDI than of an RS5. Although this technology is still in development, in a future not as distant as we might think, “electric turbo” technology could reach the streets.
