BMW 3.0 CSL, the Bavarian brand pays tribute to one of its most legendary models
The Bavarian brand has paid tribute to one of its most special models: the BMW 3.0 CSL from 1975. Let’s take a closer look!

Choosing one model from BMW’s history and naming it the most iconic of all time is no easy task, as there are many candidates. Could it be the BMW 3.0 CSL, the BMW M1, or even the BMW M3 E30? BMW Group Classic has shared a video that gives us a closer look at one of its legendary cars, the BMW 3.0 CSL, also known as the Batmobile. This coupé introduced many of the design elements that still exist on many current BMW models.

The racing version of the BMW 3.0 CSL was presented in 1973, with the classic racing stripes in the colours of BMW Motorsport. The BMW 3.0 CSL was created as a homologation special and achieved great success in the Group 2 European Touring Car Championship. Despite all its abilities on the track, the legendary Batmobile and the BMW E9 range as a whole were the first cars from the Bavarian brand to combine some of the most recognisable hallmarks of the German manufacturer, such as the double headlights at the front and the Hofmeister kink on the C-pillar. However, these elements have evolved dramatically over the years.

BMW 3.0 CSL: the brand pays special tribute
Curiously, the BMW 3.0 CSL incorporated numerous parts designed to save weight, but customers could order an additional package that added electric windows and even electric door windows. This went against the high-performance spirit of the car, since in its name, CSL, the L stands for “Leichtbau” (lightweight), yet some customers wanted the model’s bold image together with a more luxurious driving experience.

While the design of BMW has drawn attention in recent times, the BMW 3.0 CSL is one of the most representative German cars of both the brand and the era. Undoubtedly an authentic legend of racing and of the automotive world.

In 2015, specifically at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, the Bavarian brand presented a very special concept. It was the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage R, which aimed to pay tribute to the successes achieved in the IMSA by the original CSL. The design was very reminiscent of the original but with modern lines and cutting-edge technology. In addition to a carefully crafted aerodynamic package, the silhouette is highly recognisable and capable of transporting us back in time. The number 25 is also present, referencing the extraordinary record set by the factory BMW 3.0 CSL in 1975.
