BMW and The North Face unveil this innovative lightweight camper at CES 2019

The Futurelight lightweight caravan features one of the most revolutionary fabrics on the planet, thanks to its high degree of waterproofing.

Designworks, a subsidiary of BMW, has presented a highly innovative portable shelter at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (CES 2019), which is currently taking place. This revolutionary camper prototype was developed in collaboration with The North Face and is called Futurelight.

Nanospinning technology: a fabric camper with maximum waterproofing

This is a concept for a lightweight camper that debuts an innovative fabric from The North Face. This fabric features Nanospinning technology, which makes it possible to create one of the most advanced waterproof fabrics on the planet. Made up of nanometric holes, the Futurelight’s cover allows for greater surface porosity while maintaining waterproofing on the inside of the cabin.

“We combined the physical and digital worlds to showcase this material, ensuring that the brand’s holistic vision was communicated clearly while giving people a truly practical experience. Our experience working across multiple industries, and our idea of developing a product dedicated to extreme performance in new and unexpected ways, helped us give consumers a unique and never-before-seen view of the heart of the material and its key attributes,” says Laura Robin, executive at Designworks LA Studio.

Inspired by the 2008 BMW GINA Light Visionary

The Futurelight lightweight caravan was inspired by the 2008 prototype BMW GINA Light Visionary, a model that, like the camper, debuted an outer fabric cover made of flexible materials. However, the Futurelight has become the first prototype from the Bavarian firm to incorporate Nanospinning waterproof technology.

The Futurelight Camper will be on display at CES until this Friday, January 11, but only a few lucky invitees will be able to see this revolutionary product in person. Regarding the Nanospinning technology for waterproofing, it will be available in The North Face Fall 2019 range, a line that offers the highest-performance products from the North American mountaineering brand.
