BMW Concept 4, this is the future of the 4 Series from the German brand

The Frankfurt Motor Show has already showcased one of the Bavarian brand’s new arrivals. The design of the upcoming BMW M3 and BMW M4 will draw on the new concept the manufacturer has just presented. It is called BMW Concept 4 and represents a radical departure from its predecessor. It also features a front end dominated by a kidney grille so large it would equal more than four of those on other models.

The German carmaker’s statement begins by discussing the new grille, and according to the Bavarian brand itself, “the vertically oriented grille fits perfectly with the proportions of the front end as well as the illustrious past of BMW, and evokes classics such as the 328 or the 3.0 CSi“.

“The kidney grille has always been a distinctive feature of BMW cars,” added BMW Design head Domagoj Dukec. “The BMW Concept 4 presents a safe and elegant version of this iconic feature. At the same time, the BMW Concept 4 offers a glimpse of the expressive face of the 4 Series range.”

Looking beyond the vertical kidney grille, there are slim, aggressive laser headlights as well as huge air intakes. The BMW Concept 4 also features particularly expressive flanks and slim two-section mirrors that are partly finished in polished aluminium, as well as 21-inch wheels with a five-spoke pattern.

BMW Concept 4, will these grilles equip the BMW of the future?

As controversial as the front design may be, we suspect people will be more forgiving of the rear fascia. The most notable feature at the back is the flowing LED taillights, an angular bumper with a glossy black diffuser and large rectangular chrome exhaust tips.

BMW has not announced any technical details for the Concept 4, but these are not particularly important since the show model is simply intended to give us an idea of how the new 4 Series will look. We already have confirmation that the new M4, as well as the M3, will use the same updated 3.0-litre twin-turbo inline-six engine as the new BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M, producing 473 CV in standard form and 503 CV with the Competition trim.

According to the German brand itself, “the BMW Concept 4 shows the characteristic proportions of BMW in their most modern form. The elongated bonnet, the long wheelbase, the flowing roofline and the short overhangs create a modern, elegant and dynamic coupé silhouette that sweeps across the low body and conveys energy even when the car is standing still. Within that silhouette, the ultra-pure surfaces of the new BMW Concept 4 form a powerful main body.”

“The interplay of taut volumes and a small number of extremely precise contours creates a unique sense of excitement and dynamism. The expressive exterior paint in Forbidden Red accentuates the car’s surfaces in a particularly intense way; those exposed to direct light project a rich, brilliant red, while shaded areas create an almost black effect that produces striking contrast. The play of contours and volumes conveys a dramatic sense of luminosity and depth,” the brand concluded.
