BMW could bring forward the presentation of the i3

BMW is going to bring forward the presentation date of its electric i3 model, which will now be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show instead of at Frankfurt, as previously announced.

BMW wants to start exploiting the growing market for electric vehicles as soon as possible. Not long ago it presented a high-end scooter that is a delight for those who need to get around the city quickly. Now it seems the i3 model will be unveiled ahead of schedule…

At first it seemed we would not see this new car until the Frankfurt show, but now everything points to us being able to see it at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. In this way, between 7 and 17 March, BMW will make public one of its most anticipated models in the alternative fuel market.

The biggest unknown is what engine and performance this model will have. It is almost certain that one version will have a 125 kW motor with a 160-kilometre range. At the same time, a version fitted with a petrol range extender is also expected, as photos of one of these units refuelling at a petrol station have leaked.

We also don’t know what price BMW will set for its electric car, and even less when it will go on sale. From what we hear, €40,000, before state aid is deducted, would be a fairly accurate figure… We’ll see how it all turns out.

The only clear thing in all this is that BMW wants to make a grand entrance into the world of electric motoring. Do you think the entry of the big manufacturers worldwide is really what is needed for this type of vehicle to finally take hold with the public? Unfortunately, I think so…
