BMW registers new names for its SUVs under the i-Perfomance range

The registration of several related i-Perfomance trademarks for BMW’s SUVs paves the way for the arrival of these off-road model variants

BMW has a sub-brand that aims to get the maximum performance out of its models. This range includes cars that will have a hybrid powertrain capable of improving consumption and efficiency figures alongside enhanced performance. It is i-Perfomance, which has been joined by new models, and according to reports, the German brand plans to add new candidates to it. At least, according to what has become known, because BMW has just registered several model names that could become a reality soon, as Autocar has reported.

These are the names iX1, iX2, iX3, iX4, iX5, iX6, iX7, iX8 and iX9, which refer to the i-Perfomance versions of BMW’s SUV line, so soon we will have all the hybrid technology developed by the brand’s engineers up to its most off-road range. These are nine new versions that could reach the market over the coming years, although it seems that will not be exactly the case.

Registering these names for models only means that no one else can use them, and possibly only some of them will ultimately reach production. In fact, BMW previously registered the names i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8 and i9 in 2010, but as we know, only the i3 and i8 models actually went into production.

In this way, they reserve the use of these names to prevent another company from acquiring them and confusing buyers with the same nomenclature the German brand uses. Either way, it is a sign that we are going to have some really interesting months ahead, because the possibilities opened up by these registrations promise an exciting future as far as BMW’s offering is concerned.

We recently learned that the plans for upcoming models involve sharing the same platform for vehicles with internal combustion engines, hybrids, plug-in hybrids and fully electric cars. This will lower costs and allow greater manufacturing flexibility. If anything changes between now and then, there will be some new surprises to watch for to better understand what BMW has in store.
