BYD Dolphin Sport: the Asian challenge to Volkswagen and MG in Europe

BYD is launching a sporty version of its Dolphin model, a challenge that will pit it against brands such as Volkswagen, with its ID.3 GTX, or MG with its MG4 X-Power model

BYD continues to bet on electric cars. The Asian brand keeps fighting to carve out a place in the European market by offering versions within everyone’s reach with outstanding performance. Although they have presented several models over the year, such as the Atto 3, the Tang and the Han, they hope their big bet, the Dolphin, will be one of the brand’s standout models.

The BYD Dolphin is just over four metres long and came to market to make life even harder for the revamped Volkswagen ID.3 GTX, which is already reaching dealerships, and the MG4 X-Power, a model not yet presented but seen as a promise from the brand, or even the new CUPRA Born.

The Boost version of this model offers 310 km of range. Now the brand is offering a sporty version, the BYD Dolphin Sport, which will arrive on the market with a strong punch at just over €30,000.

Attractive details for the Sport version

MG was the first to pave the way for sporting performance in its electric models, presenting a high-performance version of its successful MG4, called X-Power. A version that incorporates a second motor on the front axle, providing all-wheel drive.

Given that the ID.3 will have a sportier version, with the GTX name, and that the MG4 is also awaiting the arrival of the X-Power with 430 CV, the Chinese brand has previewed a couple of details about its sporty version, although only one thousand units of this version will be manufactured.

The BYD Dolphin Sport offers customers important details, such as 17-inch alloy wheels, high-performance tyres, a lower suspension and a decorative package with blue inserts on the side skirts, the eye-catching front spoiler, the windows and the roofline, as well as a striking rear spoiler.

However, the Chinese brand has not yet revealed any details about the design it will show at the rear, thus generating greater expectation among its main followers. For now, the only colour available in its range will be matt grey, combined with grey and black in the interior.

BYD has not announced many details about the electric motor we will see in this model, but it has given a small hint about its acceleration: this model will be capable of reaching 100 km/h in less than seven seconds. Everything suggests it will receive power greater than 150 kW, equivalent to 204 CV.

It will reach the Australian market in 2024

A statement from the brand indicates that this special edition of the BYD Dolphin Sport will have only 1,000 units and will arrive on the market in 2024, at a starting price of AUD 49,990, which is just over 30,000 euros at the exchange rate. Depending on its development and how it performs in the Australian market, the brand will study bringing this model to Europe.

At first glance, it does not seem that it will be as radical as the MG4 X-Power; however, it is almost certain that it will exceed the 204 CV (150 kW) of the Dolphin Confort and Design models.
