Cars with history: remembering the Peugeot 504

There are days when one feels a particular longing for a car we have owned or that has left a special mark on us. Following on from the line Diego continued a few days ago in the series Cars with History with the Peugeot 309, I now want to turn to another Peugeot: the 504.
The Peugeot 504 was presented in 1968, as one of the first collaborations between a renowned French brand and one of the greatest coachbuilders of all time, Pininfarina. The 504 was a car well ahead of its time, and its legendary comfort qualities have endured as one of its greatest symbols.
This model was one of the Peugeot models that stayed in production the longest in different parts of the world. While in France it came to an end in 1983, in other countries it continued to be built until 2005, when the last 504 rolled off an assembly line in Nigeria. Over its history, Peugeot produced more than 3.5 million 504s worldwide.
Today, the 504 still attracts many enthusiasts, mostly in France, where a few can still be seen on the road. Across all its versions, this Peugeot was used as a family car, taxi, ambulance, load vehicle and off-roader, for example in Africa.
I have owned two Peugeot models. One was petrol and the other was diesel. The strength of the diesel engine was truly incredible, as the engine was practically indestructible. Several years have passed, but it is always worthwhile to remember the models that meant something in our history as drivers.
