Consumption comparison: Peugeot RCZ HDI vs Porsche 911 Turbo S

The British magazine Autocar has carried out a fuel consumption test comparing the RCZ HDI against the 911 Turbo S. This kind of comparison is nothing new, since Top Gear once did something similar using a Toyota Prius and a BMW M3.

As stated in the video, if we divide the power by the grams of CO2 the engine emits, we realise that the 911 Turbo S is one of the most efficient vehicles you can buy. If we run this calculation for the two cars in question, we get:

– Peugeot RCZ HDI: 163 CV / 139 g CO2 = 1.17 CV/g CO2
– Porsche 911 Turbo S: 530 CV / 268 g CO2 = 1.98 CV/g CO2

Therefore, the Porsche engine is more efficient than the Peugeot one because it produces more horsepower for every gram of carbon dioxide emitted. The calculations use the official data available on each manufacturer’s website (Peugeot, Porsche).

But the comparison adds another substantial ingredient: both models will run simultaneously on a circuit (Rockingham Speedway), with the Peugeot having to go flat out and the Porsche having to follow it (an easy task for the German car).

Given these premises, it seems unlikely that the 911 will come off worst in the economy stakes. Check it by watching the video and then the results (below the player).

As you have already seen, the Peugeot comes out the winner of the encounter with a consumption of 16.5 mpg (17.12 l/100 km), although the Porsche is not far behind with a consumption of 14.5 mpg (19.48 l/100 km). Is this comparison of any use? That I leave up to you.
