Diesel and vibrations when starting from cold: what causes them?

Vibrations when starting a diesel car may indicate a minor fault that could lead to a bigger problem capable of damaging the engine.

You’re about to start your car, which is probably diesel, and suddenly you notice vibrations that are not normal. And when something abnormal happens in a car, it is an unmistakable sign that something is not right with the mechanics. The source of the problem is possibly the engine. Even so, there are several reasons why these vibrations can occur, so let’s look at the possible causes of this problem.

Crankshaft pulley

This component is found in diesel cars and its job is precisely to reduce engine vibrations. When it is in poor condition, it cannot fulfil its purpose, and that is why vibrations occur. When vibrations are detected on starting the car, this is the first point that must be checked. The car needs to be taken to the workshop so the mechanic can inspect it. If this part is faulty, it must be replaced to avoid major failures.

Engine mounts

Another possible reason for engine vibrations on starting is some kind of deformation or breakage of one or more of the engine mounts, the silentblocks. These connect the engine to the chassis, so one of their functions is to absorb the vibrations produced during operation. The vibration may indicate that these mounts are in poor condition, and although in principle they may not be a problem, they can lead to a more serious fault.

Low temperatures

When the engine is started at low temperatures, it takes longer to reach its operating temperature. During those first few minutes a vibration occurs that will disappear as soon as it reaches that optimal temperature. If it does not recur, it may not be serious and may be caused only by that particular moment.

These are the main reasons why the car may vibrate when starting from cold. If it happens only once, especially in winter, it may be due to low temperatures, but if the problem persists, the car must be taken to the workshop so that these points that can cause the vibrations can be checked. Carrying out that inspection can prevent bigger problems and a considerably larger bill.
