Electrified cars continue to grow in the Spanish market during August

It is not something that is widely noticed, but electrified cars are gaining ground in the European market, and in the Spanish market as well. The data recorded over the last month shows that battery electric and plug-in hybrid cars not only have their place among Spanish buyers’ preferences, but are also growing month after month.

The best-selling vehicles of this type have been passenger cars, which are the ones that interest electric vehicle buyers most in Spain. In fact, of the total electrified vehicles sold in August 2026, there were 21,922 units. Of these, 19,135 were passenger cars, both plug-in hybrids and 100% electric ones.

The sales increase of electrified passenger cars has been 34%, and over the full year to date they have registered 187,179 units. But growth is not only seen across both categories combined; each of them is growing every month. Plug-in hybrid vehicles, in principle more versatile and with greater range, registered 9,631 units sold in August.

Plug-in hybrid passenger cars total 100,979 units, so the annual increase is 32.30% compared with the same period in 2025. These cars offer several advantages over battery electric cars, and buyers look at them when searching for a car of this kind.

As for battery electric cars, 9,562 units from different brands were sold during August. Over the year, from January to 31 August, 86,200 battery electric cars have been sold. Compared with the same period of 2025, sales have increased by 36%.

All these figures show that, little by little, plug-in vehicles are gaining ground in the Spanish market, demonstrating that the shift toward electric mobility is a reality and, although it is not moving at the speed expected, it is already unstoppable.
