First details of the BMW 530e iPerformance 2018

The family of electric and hybrid models from the German brand is set to be strengthened with the arrival of the new BMW BMW 530e iPerformance, which will be one of the main highlights of its range throughout 2018. This saloon joins the electrification line the company is pursuing, which now includes more and more models. The first in this category were the 330e iPerformance and the 740e iPerformance.

For BMW, the 530e iPerformance is important because it is the first iPerformance model to feature a plug-in hybrid system that will be available with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, so buyers will be able to choose whichever suits them best. The 330e is only available with rear-wheel drive, while the 740e is only available with xDrive all-wheel drive, making it the most versatile of all of them.

As with the BMW 330e, the 530e iPerformance uses a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine, which works in conjunction with an electric motor, so that combined they produce a power output of 248 CV and a peak torque of 258 Nm, according to the manufacturer. With these figures it achieves 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds and a top speed of 206 km/h, placing it in the same range as models with combustion engines.

The engines are paired with a single eight-speed automatic gearbox, with paddle shifters on the steering wheel for improved gear changes. The 9.2 kWh battery sits under the boot and, according to BMW itself, it can be charged in seven hours using a 120 V socket, while with a fast charger this drops to just three hours. Range in pure electric mode will be approximately 29 kilometres.
