First details of the new generation of the VW Passat

Passat 2

The VW Passat is one of the most popular vehicles in Europe. It is a relatively affordable, well-balanced and well-built saloon.

Since Volkswagen have almost finished the new generation of the Passat, which will be unveiled on 3 July, reaching dealerships at the end of the year.

One of the pillars of the new Passat will be its design. A much more attractive appearance than the current one is expected, with sporty touches, a rear more similar to that of the current CC and a sharp, eye-catching front end. However, both the interior space and the boot will maintain their space dimensions.

The new Passat will be built on the MQB modular platform, which is already used by several vehicles in the VAG Group such as the VW Golf, Audi A3, Seat León or Skoda Octavia. In addition, lighter materials will be used, resulting in a weight reduction of around 85 kg (depending on the exact version) compared to its predecessor.

The overall length of the Passat will be reduced slightly; however, the interior will become somewhat roomier thanks to the increased wheelbase. The boot is also expected to grow to approximately 600 litres.

As for technology, the new Passat will use state-of-the-art engines, with the possible option of a hybrid variant, an evolution of the system used by the current Jetta. Volkswagen will equip the Passat with numerous gadgets, such as full LED headlights or a fully digital instrument cluster, in the style already found in the third generation of the Audi TT.
