First look at the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage to be unveiled at Villa d'Este

The Bavarian manufacturer published yesterday the first image of the prototype it will exhibit at this year’s edition of the Villa d’Este concours d’elegance, on the shores of Lake Como. Group BMW, a regular at the prestigious Italian event, will once again pay tribute to one of its best-known classics with a futuristic homage, the 3.0 CSL (E9). The creation will be presented to the public on 22 May.
The 3.0 CSL Hommage will be based on the original concept of that version of the E9 adapted to the Group 2 regulations, whose first variant BMW homologated together with Alpina to sell to the public. As with previous prototypes, its design will highlight the most distinctive features of the model it is based on, and, more specifically, the famous aerodynamic package launched in 1973 for the second update of the CSL, which earned it the nickname “Batmobile“.
As the rendering anticipates, the bodywork of this Hommage will exude sportiness and dynamism from every corner. The features that will stand out most are the wheel arches, even wider than on the seventies CSL, and the roof and rear spoilers. The latter, very voluminous, blends naturally with the bulging “hips” and also serves as a support for the distinctive rear lights.
BMW notes that the 3.0 CSL Hommage will use carbon fibre on the lower part of the bodywork, although it has not specified which parts. The cabin will also pay homage to the car of four decades ago, combining cutting-edge technology with a high degree of refinement, but the manufacturer only refers to it in somewhat vague terms.
We will have to wait to see the complete prototype to verify this, and to learn some details about its mechanics, when it is shown at the concours d’elegance. Whether it will do justice to its predecessor or not will be judged by the event’s jury, its attendees and, you, the public.
