Five parts you should never buy at a scrapyard

The parts you should never buy at a scrapyard are safety and/or wear items. Don’t gamble with them: use new parts.

Have you ever visited a scrapyard? They offer countless parts for your car, or you can simply take a stroll to see some automotive relic. That said, scrapyard parts are not always the best choice for your vehicle. To help you avoid a mistake, we list some of the parts you should never buy at a scrapyard.

It is true that the parts sold comply with regulations, but not everything that is legal is always the most advisable. In addition, some parts age or expire even if the car has not covered many kilometres, and they must be replaced with new ones. Above all, we want you to keep in mind that appearance is not the same as safety, and safety comes first; it is dangerous to rely on components that are not new. Nevertheless, here are the parts you should never buy at a scrapyard.

Airbag

Airbags Takata

Airbags are one of the parts you should never buy at a scrapyard because they expire. This safety element works through a pyrotechnic system that interacts with the electronic control unit and sensors. These detect the severity of the impact and trigger the airbag. It is true that a computer can check whether the electronic part works, but if the pyrotechnic part is obsolete, it will not function properly when needed.

Tyres and rims

It is assumed that when you buy a tyre at a scrapyard it has been inspected, but the truth is that no one can guarantee 100% that the tyres are fit for road use. Always avoid fitting used tyres to your car, as it is very difficult to diagnose whether they have cracked or have some internal defect. Remember that tyres older than four years must be replaced. In the case of rims, the possible damage is more evident, but damaged rims may cause air leaks, vibrations, and so on.

Braking components

The braking system expires just like airbags do. Don’t gamble: the discs may be rusted and other components may be cracked, seized, leaking, etc.

Suspension system

The suspension and its components are practically the same. They can leak fluids, be defective or worn out. In addition, everything can affect your car’s stability and braking.

Filters and exhausts

Among the parts you should never buy at a scrapyard are exhaust systems and filters. These parts affect emissions, noise and comfort. Remember too that they are wear items that must be replaced with new ones.
