Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, dragsters are going electric too
Ford Performance ventures into the electric world with the new Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, a fully electric beast built for drag racing

Ford ended last year by thrilling Mustang fans and muscle car enthusiasts in general with the announcement of the Mustang Mach-E, even though it has little or nothing to do with its petrol-powered sibling. Still, an electric vehicle carrying a name as iconic as Mustang did not go down well at first. Despite that, time has proven Ford right, as the Mustang Mach-E has been a total success, and this will keep bringing change to the electric future of the Mustang.
As a proper American brand, Ford has always been associated with many of the country’s competitions, such as the legendary cdrag races, where two vehicles or even two motorcycles face off to accelerate as fast as possible over a quarter mile (402 metres) or an eighth of a mile (201 metres). It was precisely on these strips that the Ford Mustang and many other muscle cars built their reputation, a fame that endures to this day.

But times change, and they affect iconic names like the Mustang, as we have seen with the Mach-E. That revolution is now reaching competition and drag racing too: Ford Performance has announced the Mustang Cobra Jet 1400, a fully electric beast that leaves the Ford factory to revolutionise this type of racing with tremendous power and without the deafening noise typical of these events.
The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 has an exterior similar to any other Ford Performance Mustang that takes part in these races, except for the detail that its legendary logo is now painted in blue, along with the same protective equipment and interior fittings required for these events. The difference lies under the bonnet, where we find an electric motor capable of delivering a power output of 1,400 CV together with torque of 1,491 Nm available instantly, allowing it to cover the quarter mile in under eight seconds while exceeding 273 km/h.
The Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 will be unveiled soon, and more precise figures and data will surely follow. In the meantime, Ford has released a short video showing it in action on the drag strip and letting us hear its distinctive electric sound.
