Ford Mustang: the last 'muscle car' reclaims the throne

The Ford Mustang has become the only ‘muscle car’ still sold in the United States and has achieved a sales increase that takes it to a record

Although a few decades ago there were several muscle cars on the American market and they were a very popular type of vehicle, today only one of this kind remains: the Ford Mustang. The Chevrolet Camaro and the Dodge Challenger have been discontinued, which has made the Mustang the only option for enjoying one of these cars. And this has gone quite well for it, because August brought a sales increase, with a 54% rise compared to August of last year.

In total, 3,164 units of the Ford Mustang were sold throughout August, while in the same month of 2023 2,036 units were sold. Looking at the full year, 33,817 units have been sold, representing a 17.7% increase over the same period of 2023.

Ford has become a benchmark in the sale of trucks and SUVs. So far in 2024, Ford has recorded sales of 1,400,341 units in the United States alone. These sales break down into 767,562 trucks and 598,962 SUVs. The remaining 33,817 passenger cars needed to complete that figure correspond to the Ford Mustang, the only passenger car Ford currently sells.

By powertrain type, hybrids are establishing themselves as the most popular choice among American buyers. In August, 16,394 units were sold, a sales increase of 49.8% compared to August 2023. In total, Ford has sold 125,462 hybrid vehicles in the United States in 2024.

Electric vehicles have also seen their sales rise. The Ford Mustang-E has experienced an order increase of 39.8%, and the Ford F-150 Lightning shows a 86.5% increase, so the figures are working in the brand’s favor.

That said, vehicles with combustion engines still enjoy the greatest confidence from buyers. So far this year, 1,213,513 units have been sold, of which 157,647 were sold this past August. The best-selling vehicle by far in August was the Ford Ranger, with a 173.6% increase, followed by the Explorer, with a 97.1% increase.

The Mustang now reigns in the muscle car segment, although it will have a serious rival before the end of the year. At that point the Charger Daytona EV will launch, and next year it will be followed by the combustion-engine version.
