Ford Ranger: 10 years as Europe's best-selling pick-up

The Ford Ranger has been Europe’s best-selling pick-up for ten years and aims to retain its crown with a plug-in hybrid version in 2025.

It is not a particularly appealing type of vehicle in Europe, but pick-ups are very practical for hard work, such as work in the countryside. There are several models on the market, although there is not as much variety as in other markets, such as the American one. But even in a market as small as Europe’s, some models sell more than others, and although the market is shared, there is a clear winner. And it has been for 10 years.

During 2024, the Ford Ranger recorded sales of 60,400 units in Europe. This gives it a market share of 43.6%. In other words, of all the pick-ups sold in Europe, almost half are Ford Rangers. In 2024 the number of units sold rose by 1.3%. This is the overall figure, because in certain national markets increases reached as much as 18.6%.

In total terms, those 60,400 Ford Rangers sold in Europe represent a 4% increase over 2023. But Ford does not want this to change, and to strengthen the Ranger’s presence in Europe, the American company is going to launch the version with a plug-in hybrid engine. This version aims to offer all the capabilities of the model while taking advantage of the features of a more sustainable type of engine.

This new version of the Ford Ranger will continue to offer considerable payload and towing capacity and good off-road performance. The electric-mode range of this version will be 43 kilometres, which entitles it to the DGT’s environmental label 0.

Another feature of this version is the Pro Power Onboard, with the ability to deliver 6.9 kW of power to power external electrical tools and devices. This means there is no need for an external generator, as the battery’s energy is sufficient.

The Ford Ranger Plug-in Hybrid is being produced at the South African Silverton plant, and the first units are expected to reach Europe in early spring.
