Ford Transit Big Nugget Concept, this is how Ford wants you to spend your next holidays
The concept of the Ford Transit Big Nugget could reach the market in early 2020 and could rival the Volkswagen Grand California. Will it achieve its goal?
Ford seems determined to bring back the Transit Big Nugget motorhome, and the concept presented at the Caravan Salon 2019 in Düsseldorf is a strong statement of intent.
From 2006 to 2011, Ford collaborated with motorhome specialist Westfalia on the Transit Big Nugget, a motorhome based on the third-generation Transit van. The carmaker believes it is time for another Big Nugget, this time based on the latest Ford Transit.
The new concept of the Ford Transit Big Nugget could become a rival to the Volkswagen Grand California, developed on a Volkswagen Crafter, launched earlier this year. The Big Nugget concept is built by Westfalia, just like its predecessor. The 5.98-metre-long Big Nugget offers a massive interior space of 13 cubic metres and 2.05 metres of standing interior height, as it is based on the long wheelbase, high-roof model.

The oval-badged brand says the large caravan makes the most of the extra space by creating four distinct functional areas, including a living room, dining area, bedroom, bathroom and kitchen-dining area. At the front, the driver’s and passenger’s seats can be swivelled to provide a spacious living and dining area.
The centre of the vehicle contains a separate bathroom area, with a fully integrated toilet, washbasin and shower. Also in the middle of the motorhome is a kitchen with a two-burner gas stove, a large sink and a 70-litre refrigerator. Finally, the rear of the caravan includes a bedroom area with a 2-metre-long bed designed to sleep two adults.

Ford has not yet decided which engine to give the Transit Big Nugget when it arrives on the market in the first half of 2020. However, it is safe to say that one or more 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbodiesel engines will be available for the large caravan. In the standard van, the 2.0-litre diesel’s output ranges from 105 CV to 185 CV.

When the future Ford Transit Big Nugget debuts next year in European markets, it will join the smaller Ford Transit Custom Nugget van, which is currently being rolled out across the continent following its debut in Germany earlier this year.
