Geely and Volvo already have electric SUVs competing on range and value

We compare the Geely EX5 and the Volvo EX30, two compact electric SUVs from the Geely Holding group, to decide which offers the best value-performance ratio in Spain in 2025.

They belong to the same industrial group, share an electrification philosophy and target the European buyer looking for a plug-in compact SUV without surprises. However, the Geely E5 and the Volvo EX30 offer two opposing takes on the same script: the first bets on generous range and a restrained price; the second on Scandinavian design, commanding performance and a premium positioning. The Geely vs Volvo electric SUV comparison has become one of the most interesting duels in Spain’s electric C-segment.

The new family duel within the Geely Holding group

Geely Holding has controlled Volvo since 2010 and, in practice, they share platforms, batteries and suppliers. The difference is strategic: Volvo remains an aspirational brand headquartered in Gothenburg, while Geely arrives in Europe with an aggressively priced proposition. That both models compete in the same virtual showroom of the Spanish buyer says a lot about how the board has been redrawn.

Geely E5: the newcomer aiming at value for money (from €37,490)

The Geely EX5 is the first model from the parent brand to be officially sold in Spain. It features a 60.2 kWh LFP battery rated at 430 km WLTP, a 160 kW (218 CV) front-mounted motor and DC fast charging at up to 100 kW, allowing a 30 to 80% charge in around 20 minutes. Standard equipment includes a 15.4″ central screen, ventilated front seats, dual-zone climate control and a complete ADAS package.

The most striking aspect is the price: it starts at €35,990 before incentives, clearly below European rivals with similar figures. Today, it is one of the serious contenders for the best value-for-money electric SUV on the Spanish market.

Power kW Power CV Top speed WLTP range Consumption Label Fuel
160 kW 218 CV 175 km/h 430 km 15.8 kWh/100 km Zero Electric

Volvo EX30: Scandinavian design and premium performance (from €37,490)

The Volvo EX30 is the most compact and affordable electric SUV ever built by the Swedish brand. In its Single Motor Extended Range version, available in Spain, it features a 69 kWh usable NMC battery rated at 476 km WLTP, a 200 kW (272 CV) rear motor and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. It accepts DC fast charging up to 153 kW, reducing a 10-80% charge to about 26 minutes.

The interior is extremely minimalist: a single 12.3″ central screen, recycled materials and a digital architecture integrated with Google. The entry variant, Single Motor with a 51 kWh LFP battery and 344 km, lowers the starting price but penalises range. The EX30’s approach is clearly premium within the B-SUV electric segment.

Power kW Power CV Top speed WLTP range Consumption Label Fuel
200 kW 272 CV 180 km/h 476 km 16.7 kWh/100 km Zero Electric

WLTP range versus real-world consumption

On paper, the EX30 Extended Range hits harder (476 km) than the EX5 (430 km). In homologated average consumption, however, the Geely proves slightly more efficient thanks to its LFP chemistry and restrained weight. In real mixed routes both hover around 17-18 kWh/100 km; on the motorway at 120 km/h, the Volvo holds its top speed better, while the Geely handles long recharges better thanks to the thermal stability of LFP.

Power, dynamics and charging times

The rear-wheel-drive EX30 has a sportier feel and a 0-100 time that puts established hot hatches under pressure. The EX5, with front-wheel drive and comfort-oriented settings, prioritises family use. On fast charging, the Volvo wins on peak speed (153 kW vs 100 kW), although the Geely’s curve is flatter and more consistent.

Equipment, connectivity and safety

Volvo comes as standard with a top-level ADAS package, optional Harman Kardon sound and native Google Automotive integration. Geely responds with more screen area, ventilated seats and a panoramic roof already in the entry trim. On passive safety both share the group’s DNA: central airbag, urban and interurban autonomous emergency braking and active lane keeping.

Comparison table and 2025 verdict

Model Range Power DC charging Starting price Value (1-10) Performance (1-10) Equipment (1-10) Overall score
Geely EX5 430 km 218 CV 100 kW €35,990 9 7 8 8.0
Volvo EX30 ER 476 km 272 CV 153 kW €37,490 7 9 8.5 8.2

In this 2025 electric SUV comparison, the Volvo EX30 wins by a narrow margin thanks to its range, performance and a presumably higher residual value. The Geely EX5, however, is the more rational choice for anyone prioritising budget, standard equipment and an unbeatable cost per kilometre.
